MAGNESIUM STEARATE

JMB produces both commercial and high-purity grades of magnesium stearate.

The specification for the commercial grade is as follows :-

Parameter

Limit(s)

 Ash

 7.5 - 8.5 %

 Free fatty acid

 2 % maximum

 Moisture

 4.0 % maximum

 Bulk density

 0.25 g cm-3 max

JMB can supply high-purity magnesium stearate conforming to the BP 1999 specification :-

Parameter

Limits

Assay (on dried material)

 3.8 - 5.0 % Mg

Acid value of organic acid

 195 - 210

 Melting point of organic acid

 > 53 ºC

Chlorides

 passes BP 1999 test

Sulphates

 passes BP 1999 test

Moisture

 < 6.0 %

Heavy metal content

 < 20 ppm Pb

Acidity / alkalinity

 passes BP test

Lastly, we can now supply material conforming to the current EP 6.0§ specification :-

 Parameter

 Limits

 Acidity / alkalinity

 passes test

Chloride

 0.1 % max

 Sulphate

 0.5 % max

 Cadmium

 3 ppm max

 Lead

 10 ppm max

 Nickel

 5 ppm max

 Loss on drying

 6 % max

 Total viable aerobic count

 1000 micro-organisms / g max

 E. coli

 passes test

 Magnesium

 4.0 - 5.0 %

 Fatty acid composition

 >= 40 % stearic acid
 >= 90 % stearic + palmitic acid

 Fatty acid melting point

>= 53 °C

 Acid value of fatty acid

195 - 210

§ the EP 6.0 specification is only a minor amendment to EP 5.0, not affecting specification limits

These materials have been approved as Kosher by the Manchester Beth-Din.

Normal packaging is in 20 kg nett multi-wall paper sacks,
though material can be supplied in fibre drums if required.
